During his lifetime, Leonard Bernstein was photographed constantly. Those who took his picture include such visual masters as Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Stanley Kubrick (see complete list below). Now, to crown this year’s Bernstein centennial celebrations, powerHouse Books presents Leonard Bernstein 100: The Masters Photograph the Maestro by curator/photographer Steve J. Sherman and Jamie Bernstein, the composer-conductor’s eldest daughter. Due for publication in hardcover on December 11, this remarkable photo essay tells Bernstein’s life story through 100 revelatory images, combining iconic photos with previously unpublished ones. Complete with a selection of Bernstein’s own handwritten musical sketches, letters, speeches and poems – and a foreword by his daughters, Jamie and Nina, and son, Alexander – the collection offers an intimate journey into the life of an American original who changed the face of 20th-century culture.

Steve J. Sherman edited, curated, and contributed a preface to the collection. He explains:
“This photo essay is as much a celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s life as it is a tribute to the art of photography. As someone who loves great music and great photography, curating this unique collection has been a dream come true for me.”
 Jamie Bernstein comments:
“Not only was my father a brilliant composer and conductor, a gifted educator, a superb pianist, and a lifelong humanitarian – he was also pretty easy on the eyes. His lifespan covered most of the 20th century, when photography was at its zenith. My father’s career, as documented by some of the greatest photographers of the century, makes for a fascinating combined portrait of both the subject and his observers – all of which we can now behold ourselves, through the images in this book.”
