The Leonard Bernstein Office, Inc.
and Craig Urquhart are pleased to announce that Craig Urquhart, Bernstein’s
former assistant and Vice President Public Relations and Promotion, has
established The Craig Urquhart Agency, dedicated to working for musicians and
organizations in the arts. Through his
agency, Craig Urquhart will be Senior Consultant, Public Relations and
Promotion to The Leonard Bernstein Office. Urquhart will offer his expertise
not only to The Leonard Bernstein Office, but also to conductors, composers,
musicians and organizations worldwide. He will be based in New York and Berlin.
Mr. Urquhart said, “I feel very
fortunate to have been encouraged by the family of Leonard Bernstein - Jamie,
Alex and Nina – to branch out into the representation of others. Three years ago, when I began working more
intensively on behalf of Bernstein in Europe, I began receiving inquiries from
the next generation of emerging talent. It is exciting to be able to continue to work with the Leonard Bernstein
Office and also to be available to a broad array of established and emerging
artists.”
Craig Urquhart has written numerous
articles, given multiple interviews about Bernstein (BBC,
NPR, WDR, to cite a few), served as spokesperson for the LBO, and
has been involved in the production of several festivals and memorials for
Leonard Bernstein, as well as the memorial for Adolph Green. He also co-produced the Broadway tribute to
Betty Comden. He has been part of
several symposia and has lectured on the music and life of Bernstein at Tulane
University, Indiana University and Harvard.
“We are excited that Craig will be
continuing his work for The Leonard Bernstein Office in his new role as Senior
Consultant, Public Relations and Promotion through The Craig Urquhart Agency,”
said Alexander Bernstein. “Craig’s
career development marvelously reflects the impact my father had on so many
students, protégés and colleagues. Craig is seeking to make his mark in a
broader way on the world of classical music. This orbit of artists and
impresarios, business people and music lovers will surely benefit from Craig's
wealth of experience, passion and immense talent."
Spanning over 30 years, Craig
Urquhart’s professional career began in music publishing, elementary music
education and piano coaching (Thomas Hulce for the Academy Award winning film Amadeus). He began as Leonard Bernstein’s assistant in
January 1986, traveling with the Maestro throughout the world, establishing
international relationships with the world’s leading orchestras, recording
companies, presenters and artists. Following Bernstein’s death, Craig Urquhart
moved into the position of Director, Public Relations, and for ten years has
served as Vice President, Public Relations and Promotion at the Leonard
Bernstein Office. He is also founding
Managing Editor of the celebrated Leonard Bernstein newsletter, Prelude, Fugue & Riffs, and will
continue in that post.
Through his production company,
Heart Earth Music, Craig Urquhart has produced seven critically recognized
compact discs of his own music. As a performer of his own music, Craig Urquhart
has given recitals at the United Nations for Earth Day and AIDS Awareness Day;
has performed in Berlin, Paris, and Rome; and has toured Japan, as well as
offered numerous performances throughout the United States. His eighth compact
disc of original piano compositions, Within
Memory, will be released in March 2010.
Urquhart was the New Jersey Music
Teachers Association (MTA) Commissioned Composer (2006); is a returning fellow at the
Virginia Center for Creative Arts (VCCA); is a member of ASCAP; serves on the
Board of Directors of the Lotte Lehmann Foundation; and is a voting member of
the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (The Grammys).
Speaking extensively about his own
music, Urquhart has been featured on ASCAP's Audio Portraits, National Public Radio, and two BBC Radio 3 programs, Drive Time and Music Matters. He has also been interviewed for Solo Piano Publications, the Baldwin/Gibson Magazine, and NAR. The magazine Piano Today has twice featured compositions by Urquhart.
The Craig Urquhart Agency will be
based in New York and Berlin.
